Maybe you have a dog that likes to bark at something as silly as a car passing by the window, or perhaps you have a little Terrier that barks day and night, for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Either way, if your dog is barking and is causing a strain in your life, you need to understand why your dog is barking and what you can do to stop it.

Before we get started, it is important for you to understand that your dog barking is a natural occurrence. You cannot expect your dog to stop barking altogether. You can, however, train your dog that there are certain times when they are allowed to bark, and other times when they are not. If you’re up to it, you can even control your dog’s desire to bark to they point where they can bark on command. Believe it or not, if you treat your dog every time they bark when you say your trigger word, (like “speak”), you will be making it much easier on yourself when it comes time to stop your dog from barking at times when you don’t want them to bark.

The most important tip you absolutely have to learn is that you can’t stop your dog from barking unless you understand why they are barking. Dogs really only bark for 3 reasons: they are scared, they want to protect something (themselves, or their possessions), or they are excited. If you can figure out which of the three reasons you are facing, it makes it very easy to remove your dog from the situation and end the barking, or prevent the situation from happening altogether.

A good example is if your dog barks whenever someone comes to the door. You can start to make it a non-event by going to the door, turning to your dog and acknowledging their barking, but assuring them it is OK. Do not give your dog an incredible amount of attention, and do not, under any circumstance, give your dog a treat… it will only reinforce the behavior.
